There has been widespread criticism of Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after Anil Kumble opted to stay back in England after the Champions Trophy and stepped down from the job of head coach for national cricket team.
Some cricketing legends have blamed BCCI for not handling the Kohli-Kumble tussle properly. Looking forward, BCCI has invited applications of contenders for the head coach to be interviewed by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC).
Some of the names doing rounds among the top contenders are Ravi Shastri, Virender Sehwag, Lal Chand Rajput and Tom Moody. BCCI wants a coach that is viable with the captain and the team.
Interestingly, one of the applications received by the board is of a mechanical engineer Upendra Nath Bramhachari. The 30 year old engineer works for a construction company, and has applied for the post with the intention of dragging an arrogant Virat Kohli on the right track.
After initially asking for a long term job guarantee, Ravi Shastri on Tuesday, 27 June 2017 decided to apply for the position as well. He has been the director of the team between 2014 and 2016 and the team reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2015 and T20 world cup in 2016 under his tenure. He is the top contender for the job considering the bond he shares with the Indian captain.
Another name coming up is the former Indian opener Virender Sehwag who is quite famous among the Indian cricket fans. However, he lacks coaching experience and has mentored IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab for the last two years.
Lalchand Rajput has quite some coaching experience and has previously coached India U-19, India-A teams and Indian team for a short tenure. He has been the head coach of Afghanistan for the last one year and the team has done wonders.
Tom Moody is the most experienced of the lot. He has been in the coaching profile since 2001. He took the Sri Lankan team to the 2007 world cup final and has been the coach of IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad since 2013 and has done well. His other stints include the director of Big Bash League team Melbourne Renegades.
