Virat Kohli and Sanjiv Goenka have jointly partnered to create a platform to honour exceptional performances, in line with their vision to support the development of Indian Sports. The RP-SG Indian Sports Honours is dedicated to rewarding excellence in the field of sports. These Sports Awards will also help identify and support athletes with potential and award them scholarships of upto 2 crores.
These Awards are special as Sports Journalists, Sporting Legends and the Fans will be coming together to reward their heroes.
Virat Kohli, Indian cricket captain on being asked about investing and influencing other sports said, “I believe if reach a position in life to influence others, you must definitely bring the change. This is another step in that direction. Sports have what made me what I am and I want sports to grow in India. It will be great if more people from cricket fraternity come together and support other sports to grow in India.”
Virat added, “India has made rapid strides as a sporting nation. The days of being a one-sport country are behind us. The time is just right to introduce an institution that will recognise and reward our top sporting achievers and put the spotlight on those who are expected to do the country proud in the years to come.”
Apart from the recipients who will be shortlisted and decided by the SJFI (Sports Journalists Federation of India) and Advisory Council respectively, there will be ‘Popular Choice’ awards whose winners will be picked directly by the fans.
Promising Indian athletes with the potential to excel in global events of the near future will be awarded scholarships of a minimum 2 crore by the ViratKohli Foundation (VKF) in association with the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group. Scholarships will also be awarded to individuals who have undertaken exceptional initiatives to promote sports at the grassroot level. The shortlisted athletes will be tracked through the year and their progress monitored.
The inaugural RP-SG Indian Sports Honours Ceremony will be held in Mumbai on Saturday, 11 November 2017, performances by Indian athletes in four team sports and twenty individual sports from 1 August 2016 to 31 July 2017 will be in contention for the awards.
