Meta’s micro-blogging platform Threads has crossed 175 million monthly active users, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced ahead of the platform's first anniversary. Threads, launched on 5 July last year, was strategically timed to capitalise on the turbulence surrounding X, formerly known as Twitter, during Elon Musk’s acquisition.
The new platform quickly attracted 100 million users within its first week of launch last year, largely due to a streamlined sign-up process for Instagram users. However, many of these early adopters have since become inactive.
Zuckerberg reflected on the platform’s eventful year in a recent post online, highlighting its rapid user growth. In April, he reported that the platform had over 150 million monthly active users. Despite this growth, Threads has yet to disclose crucial engagement metrics such as daily active users and average time spent on the app.
Market intelligence firm Sensor Tower reports that Threads has struggled with user retention and engagement. Last month, the app saw users average only three sessions and seven minutes per day, a sharp decline of 79 per cent and 65 per cent respectively from its initial figures in July last year.
Currently, Threads does not feature advertising, resulting in minimal revenue for Meta. The platform has recently joined the Fediverse, a network of social media sites that support the ActivityPub protocol, allowing for interaction across different platforms.
