Low-cost airline SpiceJet may to enter the retail business, according to reports.
The airline aims to sell a whole range of products under its subsidiary called Spice Style. It will offer its customers products such as ties, shades, purses, watches and cufflinks. The reports suggest that SpiceJet will sell products from designer Rohit Bal and perfumes by actress Sunny Leone.
It can be recalled that in July 2016, SpiceJet incorporated a subsidiary that focuses on consumer merchandise business.
This subsidiary deals in electronic items, accessories and apparels. It showcases its products on various platforms such as airport shops, online platform and inflight sales.
A formal announcement form the company is still awaited but it is likely to happen in a month time, according to the media reports. The low-cost airline is the fourth largest airline by passenger numbers in India.
In a recent interview with BW Businessworld, Ajay Singh, chairman and managing director of SpiceJet, highlighted how the company is working to tackle its business challenges.
In order to become profitable, he said, "We need to ensure we have a good contract with an airline maker. So, Boeing has been selected now. Going forward, we will continue to reduce our costs. And then, we will continue to create more differentiation to our customers."
He added, " Our flights are full because we are on time, we serve hot meals, we have the lowest cancellations, and we give more space in the premium economy (six inches of extra space) so people just fly with us over and over. To fly on time, fleet should be in top shape, all systems and processes should work smoothly, and this is not easy to do day in and day out."
