SAIL-Bhilai, a division of Steel Authority of India (SAIL), has contributed significantly to the strategic Sela Tunnel Project in Arunachal Pradesh by supplying over 7,300 tonnes of steel. The project aims to enhance all-weather connectivity to the Tawang region, providing faster and more efficient transportation routes.
According to a statement issued by SAIL-Bhilai, the supplied steel includes various grades such as TMT bars, wire rods, angles, channels, plates, and joists, essential for the construction of the Sela Tunnel Project. The total volume of steel supplied by SAIL for the project amounts to 24,216 tonnes.
Other SAIL plants like Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP), IISCO Steel Plant at Burnpur, Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), and Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) have also contributed steel for the project. This collective effort underscores SAIL's commitment to supporting critical infrastructure development initiatives across the country.
The Sela Tunnel Project, situated at an altitude of 13,700 feet in the West Kameng district, consists of two tunnels and a link road. Executed by the Border Road Organisation (BRO), the project is expected to reduce travel time to Tawang by at least an hour.
Additionally, it will ensure uninterrupted connectivity to the Tawang region, even during the winter months when Sela Pass remains closed.
The completion of the Sela Tunnel Project is crucial for improving connectivity to the Line of Actual Control (LAC), facilitating easier movement for military personnel and equipment throughout the year.
SAIL's contribution underscores its role in supporting critical infrastructure projects vital for national security and economic development.
