The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, recently unveiled a number of new measures at the Bengal Global Business Summit. These include plans to increase the state's exports by double, update logistics, and encourage the production of renewable energy.
She also revealed intentions to improve internet connectivity in the eastern region by building a new sub-sea cable landing point at Digha and promoting biofuels as policies.
Banerjee revealed during the conference that the state's economy is expanding at an 8.41 per cent rate and that this fiscal year, it is predicted to reach USD 212 billion. She spoke to a prestigious group of people, which included prominent businessmen like Rishad Premji, Sanjeev Goenka and Mukesh Ambani. Banerjee proposed the construction of four new industrial routes in north Bengal: Durgapur to Cooch Behar, Dankuni-Jhargram, Tajpur port-Raghunathpur, and Dankuni-Kalyani.
Bengal has almost 90 lakh MSME businesses that employ 1.3 crore people, Banerjee said, stressing the state's important leather manufacturing complex, which is expected to grow to be the biggest in Asia.
