In a move echoing the ambitious Central Vista project undertaken by the Central Government, the Maharashtra Government has unveiled plans for the Maha Vista project aimed at revamping key government buildings within the state.
The proposal, presented during the interim budget session by Finance Minister Ajit Pawar in the legislative Assembly on Tuesday, outlines a comprehensive redevelopment strategy aimed at enhancing infrastructure capacity.
During his budget speech, Pawar, who also serves as the Deputy Chief Minister in the Eknath Shinde government, announced the intention to invite proposals from international architects for the redesign of government buildings in the Mantralaya and its surrounding areas, incorporating cutting-edge facilities.
Speaking about the Maha Vista Project, Pawar revealed that Mumbai-based architect PK Das had presented a plan worth Rs 7,500 crores. Encompassing approximately 14 to 15 acres of land, the proposed project includes the redevelopment of ministerial bungalows, the Vidhan Bhavan building, and the Mantralaya complex.
Additionally, plans are underway to construct a new garden and roads near the MLA hostel, aimed at enhancing the overall infrastructure.
Emphasising the need for international expertise, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde suggested inviting renowned architects to contribute innovative ideas to the project. Mr. Pawar outlined that Maha Vista would feature a new Vidhan Bhavan, modern Mantralaya buildings, and residential towers for ministers, IAS, and IPS officers, replacing existing ministerial bungalows.
The project aims to address parking and open space requirements effectively.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis highlighted the future challenges concerning constituency delimitation in 2026, which would lead to a significant increase in the number of MLAs and MLCs.
Anticipating a space crunch at the Vidhan Bhavan during this period, Fadnavis emphasised the importance of the Maha Vista project in planning for long-term infrastructure needs.
The Maha Vista project represents a strategic initiative by the Maharashtra Government to modernise and optimise infrastructure resources, ensuring readiness for future demographic and administrative demands. With a vision for sustainable development, the project aims to create a conducive environment for efficient governance and public service delivery in the state.
