In a significant stride towards environmental sustainability and economic efficiency, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated India’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled bus on Friday.
This initiative, undertaken by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), aims to convert 5,000 diesel buses into LNG-powered vehicles in its initial phase. The move is part of a broader strategy to curb carbon emissions and address the challenges posed by escalating diesel prices.
The newly unveiled bus, converted from diesel to LNG, symbolises Maharashtra's commitment to embracing cleaner energy alternatives. With concerns over air pollution and fuel expenditure mounting, the transition to LNG holds promise for both environmental conservation and financial savings.
Currently, approximately 34 per cent of MSRTC's total expenditure is attributed to fuel costs, highlighting the urgency of adopting more sustainable practices.
Following the launch, MSRTC intends to swiftly integrate the LNG-fueled bus into its operational fleet upon completion of the certification process. Collaborating with the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) and Kings Gas, the corporation aims to establish a robust infrastructure for the seamless supply and distribution of LNG, ensuring the smooth functioning of the converted buses.
The significance of this initiative extends beyond immediate benefits, heralding a comprehensive shift towards greener energy solutions in Maharashtra's transportation sector. By reducing reliance on diesel and embracing LNG, MSRTC anticipates a marked reduction in pollution levels and a substantial decrease in fuel expenditure over time.
