I Always Start My Day With Yoga, Meditation & Exercise: Sunil Duggal, CEO, Hindustan Zinc
Sunil Duggal is Vedanta’s Global CEO for Metals and Mining for Group companies including Sterlite Copper, Vedanta Zinc International – Africa and Ireland, Copper Mines of Tasmania – Australia.
He is also the CEO & Whole-time Director of Hindustan Zinc Limited since October 2015 and Vice Chairman of International Zinc Association (IZA). As a seasoned professional with more than three decades of experience, Duggal has been working in key positions in leading corporates towards infrastructure and sustainability space.
Under his able leadership, HZL has been ranked 1st in Environment Category & 5th in Sustainability globally by Dow Jones Sustainability Index. His thrust on adopting best-in-class mining and smelting techniques, state of art environment-friendly technologies and mechanization, automation & digitalization of operational activities has added great value.
What excites you to go to work every morning?
My Passion for Work and my purpose to do things differently and sustainable manner which adds value to self and society. In our line, every day presents new opportunities as well as challenges which implies consistent learning and growth. The nature of my work also demands travelling to different cities and meeting new people which gives me the opportunity to meet people with different sensibilities, creativity and learn from them.
What do you like for breakfast?
I always ensure that I never miss it and keep it simple with Cereals / Paratha along with some fruits.
Any morning rituals like Yoga and Exercise?
My fitness ritual is a combination of high-intensity activities with relatively relaxed workout formats to balance both my mind and my body. I always start my day with Yoga, meditation and exercise. Sometimes prefer brisk walking around lakes of our Udaipur.
How important is eight hours sleep for you?
It is absolutely essential. I sleep early and rise early. A night of good night sleep is very important for me to function effectively, stay alert and active for the next day.
How do you spend your evening?
I usually spend my evenings interacting with my colleagues at work. I believe that in order to form authentic bonds with colleagues, it is extremely important to take an interest in their lives outside of work. Hence I try to invest some time in getting to know my colleagues beyond work including new joiners. It is refreshing to interact with them as they bring in more vigour and creativity. If I wrap up my work early, I try spending as much time with my family.
Anything extra you would like to add in day-to-day activities?
I would like to remain purposeful and excited. Hence I read a lot and would like to do more of that on a regular basis.
