With the integral role it plays in ensuring company performances, the HR department can assist as a business advisor rather than only handling regulatory challenges. This view strongly prevailed during a panel discussion at BW HR Excellence Awards 2016.
HR is instrumental to change the mindset of people, to pick the best people, who would thrive in a competitive environment. It is tough to keep up the standards, sustain performance, and to keep an entire team motivated, industry veterans feel. "Building on some wins and going forward is important from HR's point of view," said Ashish Chauhan. Compliance comes first than revenue in regulatory business.
It is the role of the CHRO to recognize good work, and not keep all at same rank, to rationalize at regular intervals so employees are aligned to company goals.
"Reaction of organisation in bad times is what holds them in good stake with employees," said Sameer Nair, Group CEO, Balaji Telefilms. When things go wrong, it is hard to assign blame. It is then the role of HR to assure employees and keep them on board, to convey the message that "we are all in it together, we will eventually win."
"Employees actually look at seniors to do it first, any change in the organization is best led by the CHRO, who is respected and emulated," said Sumit Shukla,CEO, HDFC Pension Life.
HR will help to actually evaluate an individual and motivate. Evaluation every two-three years is a good tool to manage promotion, retention and attrition, which can be done by rating people onto certain parameters and by using a rating scale for reward, said Robin Sen of Grant Thornton.
