Gamification is set to transform traditional education methods by making learning more engaging and accessible, according to Union Minister of State for Education, Sukanta Majumdar. In a video message at the Indian Gaming Convention (IGC) 2024, he talked about the potential of gamification to encourage critical thinking, problem-solving and creativity, which could help prepare students for a tech-driven future. The two-day event is organised by the Internet and Mobile Association of India and is being held at the Taj Palace, New Delhi.
The theme of IGC 2024, ‘India—the Next Superpower in Gaming,’ is based upon the country's growing influence in the global gaming sector. Meta is the title partner for the convention, which features over 60 speakers, including policymakers, senior government officials and industry leaders, addressing an audience of more than 1,000 delegates.
During his address, Majumdar noted that emerging technologies like gamification offer educators the ability to cater to individual student needs, thus making education more inclusive and engaging. He stated that gamification could help bridge learning gaps and make complex subjects more accessible to students. He also pointed out the Ministry of Education’s efforts towards using innovation to modernise the Indian education system, as outlined in the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
"NEP 2020 focusses on the use of technology-driven tools such as gamification, augmented reality and virtual reality to improve educational outcomes," Majumdar said. He added that these innovations are key to making learning more interactive and relevant in today's digital landscape.
The minister also referenced initiatives like Atal Tinkering Labs and Startup India, which aim to foster a culture of innovation among young people. He urged that while gaming technology offers educational benefits, it is essential to promote responsible gaming practices, particularly among younger audiences. "The government, parents and educators must collaborate to ensure that gaming habits contribute positively to cognitive development without encouraging addiction or harmful behavior," Majumdar stressed.
