Necessity, as they say, is the mother of invention. Shivani Malik too founded her food startup Mother's Kitchen in response to a need that she became aware of when her daughter was diagnosed with a gluten allergy when they were living in London. That put her on a mission to provide gluten-free food options for people facing similar difficulties. This personal project would eventually turn into a successful company that would change many people's lives.
Early Life
Mother's Kitchen's began life as a catering company with Malik supplying moms of children with gluten allergies with gluten-free food. As the demand for her products increased, Malik took to supplying gluten-free wheat flour to shops across the UK and eventually turned into an importer of gluten-free wheat flour in London.
The journey was anything but easy. Malik faced financial constraints, yet she persevered and invested her savings in the venture. She juggled multiple roles in her organisation, from being a delivery girl to a saleswoman, and she even operated online, showcasing her unwavering determination to succeed.
Malik says the driving force behind Mother's Kitchen was her own desire to make a meaningful contribution to society beyond her role as a housewife. Feeding others brings joy to her, and she felt that her brand could touch the lives of even more people by providing them with wholesome and nutritious options.
International Presence
Today, Mother's Kitchen specialises in packaged bakery food, offering a diverse range of gluten-free, lactose-free, and vegan products. Boasting a global outreach, the brand has established a presence in the UK, US, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, China, and Japan.
Despite the challenges posed by the Covid pandemic, Malik's foresight in targeting the export market helped the business to flourish during this period. The surge in demand for turmeric, a key ingredient in their products, underscored the increasing health consciousness of consumers worldwide.
Future Plans
Mother's Kitchen plans for the future includes working with more distributors and gradually expand the market for their goods. The company is eager to make a splash in India’s domestic market while retaining a strong presence in its overseas markets. As part of its growth strategy, the team is also looking into the corporate gifting industry.
Mother's Kitchen is prepared to work with Amazon in their upcoming phase of growth, which will be a significant move towards solidifying global presence. Additionally, the company has created a line-up of enthusiastic distributors who are ready to bring their nutritious products to new markets.
Malik continues to make a difference in people's lives with Mother's Kitchen, leaving a lasting impression on the food landscape. Taking one step at a time, she embraces the future with optimism and a commitment to making Mother's Kitchen a household name globally.
