Bengaluru is the 5th largest city in the world to use Uber pool globally, Christian Freese, GM Bengaluru and South Expansion, Uber India said at the BW Businessworld Urban Infrastructure Conclave 2017 held in Bengaluru today. “One out of four Uber rides in Bengaluru is shared,” he said.
Uber is using technology to solve the urban infrastructure problems in India, especially in high-traffic cities like Bengaluru, Freese said. In the context that there are 1 billion + cars in the world, he said that car itself is not the problem but how we use it, indicating that cars are being misused by not sharing the rides.
Bengaluru which is notorious for traffic congestion adds 1,600 vehicles per day and 22 per cent of all carbon emissions in the city come from transportation. As per Uber statistics, the average speed in the city has come down to 9.2 km/hr and cars sit idle 96 per cent of the time.
Uber is pushing its pool or shared travel concept to solve the urban infrastructure problems. It saved 312 million rides globally with Uber pool and 55,560 metric tons of carbon dioxide.
