The smartphone segment under Rs 40,000 has become fiercer after the launch of Xiaomi’s Mi Mix 2 and Nokia 8. Earlier OnePlus 5 was the only choice among buyers, in this price category, but now three brands will compete against each other for market share.
While Xiaomi is ahead of Nokia 8 and OnePlus 5, when it comes to display, as Mi Mix 2 features a bezel-less display and other two don’t. According to rumours, OnePlus 5T and Nokia 9 with bezel-less display will soon be launched in the country.
But right now Mi Mix 2, OnePlus 5, and Nokia 8 are the hottest phones in this category. Let’s find out how their specs stand against each other.
Mi Mix 2
Xiaomi on Tuesday (10 October) launched its much-awaited bezel-less smartphone Mi Mix 2 in India. Xiaomi unveiled Mi Mix 2 last month. Priced at Rs 35,999, the smartphone will go on special preview sale from 17 October 12 pm onwards- exclusively through Flipkart and Mi.com. Mi Mix 2 will also be available at offline stores and Mi Home from the first week of November.
Mi Mix 2 is powered by Qualcomm’s fastest Snapdragon 835 Octa-core processor. It has 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage which is not expandable through a MicroSD card.
The highlight of Mi Mix 2 is its bezel less 18:9 display; it features a 5.99-inch FHD + (2160x1080) full screen display. According to Xiaomi, the device has the same size as a 5.5-inch display device but due Mi Mix 2’s bezel-less design, users will get more display area. The company has ditched the proximity sensor instead they use ultrasonic technology for that.
It sports a 12-megapixel Sony IMX386 image sensor with f/2.0 aperture, PDAF autofocus, 4-axis OIS, and two-tone flash at the rear. On the front is a 5-megapixel selfie camera with beauty mode.
Mi Mix 2 is backed by a 3400mAh non-removable battery which supports Quick Charge 3.0. There is a fingerprint scanner below the rear camera, with which you can unlock the device. The handset comes with LTE 4-antenna technology which Xiaomi claims give up to 100 per cent faster 4G service.

OnePlus 5
The smartphone is available in two RAM and storage configurations of 6GB RAM+64GB storage and 8GB RAM+128GB at Rs 32,999 and Rs 37,999 respectively. The 6GB RAM variant comes in grey slate and soft gold shade and the 8GB RAM variant comes in midnight black and grey slate shade. There is no MicroSD card slot in the smartphone and storage cannot be expanded.
Both handsets run on Android 7.1.1 Nougat with company’s OxygenOS on top which is pretty impressive. It powered by 2.45 GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and overall performance of the device is good so you don’t need to worry about multitasking.
OnePlus 5 features a 5.5-inch full HD (1920x1080) optic AMOLED display with 2.5D curved glass and Corning Glass Glass 5 for protection on top. OnePlus 5 sports a dual camera on the rear with 16-megapixel+20-megapixel sensors and dual LED Flash where the first one is a wide-angle camera with f/1.7 and the second one is a telephoto lens with f/2.6 aperture. On the front is a 16-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture and Screen Flash.
The smartphone is backed by a non-removable 3300mAh battery which supports Dash Charge and the phone. The handset has dedicated slots for dual-SIM (nano+nano) configuration. The smartphone also has a front mounted fingerprint sensor which unlocks it in 0.2 seconds.

Nokia 8
Nokia recently launched its flagship smartphone Nokia 8 in India. Priced at Rs 36,999, Nokia 8 will be available on Amazon and retail outlets from October 14. The handset is available in polished blue, tempered blue, steel, and polished copper.
Nokia 8 runs on Android 7.1.1 Nougat out-of-the-box which will be upgraded to Android Oreo soon. It is powered by a 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Octa-core processor coupled with 4GB RAM. It has 64GB internal storage which is expandable up to 256GB through a hybrid dual-SIM configuration where second SIM slot doubles as a MicroSD card holder.
Nokia 8 features a 5.3-inch IPS QHD (2560x1440) display with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection and 2.5D curved glass. It sports a dual 13-megapixel rear camera where one works as a monochrome sensor and another as an RGB sensor with optical image stabilisation. On the front is a 13-megapixel selfie camera with display flash, PDAF, and f/2.0 aperture.
There is a feature called ‘Bothie’ where you can shoot from both rear and front cameras simultaneously, you can also live stream the ‘Bothie’ videos to Youtube and Facebook. Nokia 8 has a unibody metal design made up of 6000 Aluminum series.
The dual-SIM handset is backed by a 3090mAh non-removable battery. The home button below the display also doubles as the fingerprint sensor. The handset is IP54 rated splashproof.
