The week before the India Art Fair is always exciting in New Delhi. Art and design exhibits liven up the city, and the air is buzzing with creativity. On January 29, Galleria VSB showcased 55 artworks by 24 modern masters such as FN Souza, SH Raza, MF Husain, KH Ara, Manjit Bawa, KG Subramanyan, Asit Kumar Haldar, Hemen Mazumdar, Ram Kumar, B Prabha, Jogen Chowdhury, Jamini Roy, and Chameli Ramachandra.
Curated by jewellery designer Vandana Bhargava, the show provides the viewer a unique opportunity to delve into the cultural richness and artistic legacy the masters have bestowed upon the world. Tree by S.H Raza is a must-see. He was known for incorporating spiritual and philosophical concepts in his work. In the painting, the depiction of an arrow transitioning from yellow to black possibly represents how life often transitions between light and dark. Untitled by M.F Husain, depicts a bull, which he saw as a vahana for Lord Shiva and Parvati. Another interpretation of this work could be the link to farming representing India.
The show has several other pieces that stand out and capture the viewer. This must-see exhibition spotlights their unique styles and bold thematic explorations that have left an indelible mark on Indian art. Beyond showcasing technical brilliance, the works convey rich narratives and cultural depth, serving as enduring sources of inspiration. The show titled, Timeless Strokes: The Masters also marks the 20th anniversary of the gallery, and will be on view till Feb 9.
Bhargava’s interest in art started with collecting traditional Indian art, which also had an influence on her jewellery design. With time she started collecting work by modern masters and contemporary artists. For the collection at the gallery, she has commissioned a series on divinity art based on lord Jagannath, which should be on view in the near future.
Speaking about the current exhibition, Vandana Bhargava, says, “Timeless Strokes is not just an exhibition; it is a journey through the minds and souls of these visionaries who have, through their unparalleled creativity, shaped the very landscape of modern & contemporary art. Their distinct styles and fearless exploration of themes have conveyed deeper narratives, emotions, and cultural significance that have left an enduring legacy, inspiring future generations and contributing significantly to the global appreciation of Indian art.”
