In Rabi Marketing Season (RMS) 2024–25, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) has bought 266 lakh metric tonne (LMT) of wheat, exceeding the previous year's total of 262 LMT and ensuring the country's food grain sufficiency.
During RMS 2024–2025, more than 22 lakh Indian farmers received benefits related to the procurement of wheat.
Following their purchase of wheat at the Minimum Support Price (MSP), these farmers instantly received a direct bank account credit of around Rs. 61 lakh crore.
The RMS wheat procurement process typically starts on 1 April, but this year, in most of the procuring States, it was preponed by around a fortnight for the convenience of farmers.
FCI has been able to guarantee a consistent supply of food grains into the Public Distribution System (PDS) thanks to the significant amount of wheat procurement. In order to meet the annual requirement of about 184 LMT of wheat under various welfare schemes, including PMGKAY, this entire procurement process has been crucial.
For RMS 2024–2025, the Indian government announced a Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs. 2275 per quintal for wheat. In order to guarantee that farmers get paid fairly, the MSP serves as a safety net. Additionally, if farmers find higher rates on the open market, they are free to sell their food grains there, which promotes competition in the market. Farmers now have greater economic certainty as a result of the MSP guarantee and their freedom to sell on the open market.
