The Udyam registration portal, under the micro, small and medium enterprise (MSME) ministry, has reported a significant milestone in employment figures for (MSMEs). As of 4 July 2024, the total employment generated by registered MSMEs has surpassed 20 crore, reaching 20.19 crore jobs.
This figure includes 2.32 crore jobs from Goods and Service Tax (GST) -exempted informal micro enterprises. The current employment data shows a substantial increase of 66 per cent compared to July of the previous year when the number stood at 12.1 crore jobs.
The portal also indicates that 4.68 crore MSMEs are currently registered. Notably, women constitute a significant portion of this workforce, with 4.54 crore female workforce reported among the total jobs.
According to the Finance Ministry’s 2022-23 data, the MSME sector has been creating 11.10 crore jobs, including 3.6 crore in manufacturing, 7,000 in non-captive electricity generation and transmission, 3.8 crore in trade and 3.6 crore in other services in the rural and the urban areas across the country.
Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) under the Finance Ministry stated in its monthly economic report, that the number of people employed in the MSME sector has gone up by 5.3 times since the launch of the Udyam portal.
