The appointment committee of cabinet on Friday appointed 1989 batch IFS Officer Vikram Misri as India’s next foreign secretary.
“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Misri, Deputy NSA in the National Security Council Secretariat, to the post of Foreign Secretary with effect from July 15,” said the order issued by the Ministry of Personnel Public Grievances and Personnel.
During his tenure as ambassador to Beijing in 2019–2021, Misri was instrumental in facilitating communication between the Chinese government and the military following the commencement of the standoff in the Ladakh sector of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in May 2020.
Bilateral relations have fallen to a six-decade low following a vicious battle in the Galwan Valley in June 2020 that claimed the lives of twenty Indian soldiers and at least four Chinese forces.
Additionally, Misri represented India as an ambassador to Myanmar (2016–2018) and Spain (2014–2016). Prime Ministers IK Gujral (1997–1998), Manmohan Singh (2012–2014), and Narendra Modi (May–July 2014) all had him as their private secretary. Additionally, he served time at the Indian embassies in Germany, Belgium, Pakistan, the United States, and Sri Lanka.
