As India went for the seventh and final phase of the general election on 1 June, brisk polling was observed across the nation with an 11.31 per cent voter turnout recorded by 9 a.m. This phase encompasses 57 constituencies spanning seven states and the Union Territory of Chandigarh, including the high-profile constituency of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking a third consecutive term in the Lok Sabha.
Voters Turn Out in Large Numbers
Polling stations across Punjab (13 constituencies), Uttar Pradesh (13), West Bengal (9), Bihar (8), Odisha (6), Himachal Pradesh (4), Jharkhand (3), and Chandigarh (1) have opened their doors to a steady stream of voters determined to make their voices heard. This election phase will determine the representatives for these key regions, potentially shaping the future of the nation's governance.
Leaders Urge Public Participation
Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to encourage citizens to exercise their right to vote. "Together, let’s make our democracy more vibrant and participative," he urged. Echoing this sentiment, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also called upon the public to turn out in large numbers to vote.
Congress Stance on Exit Polls
In a strategic move, the Congress party has opted out of participating in Lok Sabha exit poll debates on television channels. Congress spokesperson and media department chairperson Pawan Khera stated that the party prefers to avoid engaging in speculation and the competitive race for TRP. "The voters have cast their votes and their verdict has been secured," Khera emphasised.
Complaints Lodged with Election Commission
The Congress party has lodged 117 complaints with the Election Commission of India. These complaints include 14 against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, 8 against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and 3 against Union Home Minister Amit Shah, among others from the BJP leadership. The nature of these complaints ranges from alleged violations of the Model Code of Conduct to other electoral malpractices.
