B.K. Birla fondly known as Basant Babu was born on January 12, 1921. He would make it to the office by 8:45 a.m. every single day till his mid-90s, even when he all wanted to focus on his hobbies, the Birla Academy and the Sangeet Kala Mandir.
He had transformed cotton and textile group into the diversified business. He got involved in the business when he was 16 years old. His first major responsibility was to handle Kesoram Cotton Mills, which his father Ghanshyam Das Birla handed him in 1946.
He has given back to society in his own way. He has started 11 educational institutions, including schools and engineering colleges such as Birla Public School in Qatar, BK Birla College of Arts, Commerce, and Science in Kalyan.
This great old man has faced many hurdles in his life. When he was at the peak of his career as a successful industrialist, his relationship with the government was shattered as economic growth was slow during the pre- liberalisation era.
Birlas had developed their hometown of Pilani by establishing the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, and B.K. Birla Institute of Engineering and Technology. He had also established the Indo-Ethiopian Textiles Share Company which is the first major joint venture by an Indian industrialist.
He was a trustee of the confidence that his shareholders reposed in companies. People within his organization would work in their own way to make his enterprise successful.
He was awarded the medal of Menelik II, the highest Ethiopian Award by the Emperor of Ethiopia Haile Selassie I.
