Mike Krieger, co-founder of Instagram and more recently Artifact, has taken on a new role as the Chief Product Officer at Anthropic, a company specialising in AI technology. In his new position, Krieger will spearhead product engineering, management and design efforts as Anthropic endeavours to broaden its suite of AI applications, notably Claude, its generative AI technology.
Expressing enthusiasm for his new role, Krieger praised Anthropic’s dedication to building trustworthy AI systems that enhance human capabilities. “I’m thrilled to join the exceptional team at Anthropic and partner with them to design and scale transformative products like Claude. The potential for AI to positively impact the world is immense, and I believe Anthropic has the talent, principles and technology to help realize that potential,” said Krieger in a statement.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei hailed Krieger’s appointment, recognising his outstanding engineering skills and leadership qualities. Amodei stressed Krieger’s background in developing intuitive products and user experiences, citing it as invaluable as Anthropic seeks to innovate in the AI space.
Krieger’s journey to Anthropic follows his departure from Instagram alongside co-founder Kevin Systrom in 2018, after Meta’s acquisition of the social media platform. Together, they ventured into Artifact, a personalized news app aiming to aggregate and recommend news content. Despite Artifact’s initial plan to cease operations, it was acquired by Yahoo in April, marking a new chapter for Krieger.
Krieger’s hire comes amid intensifying competition in the AI landscape, with companies like OpenAI and Google showcasing advancements in AI-powered platforms.
