Elon Musk's X (formerly Twitter) has banned 2,30,892 accounts in India from 26 April to 25 May. The majority of these bans, totaling 2,29,925 accounts, were due to the promotion of child sexual exploitation and non-consensual nudity. Additionally, 967 accounts were removed for promoting terrorism on the microblogging platform during this period.
This wave of account bans comes as part of X's compliance with the IT Rules, 2021. The company also reported receiving 17,580 complaints from users in India through its grievance redressal mechanisms within the same timeframe.
Of the 76 grievances appealing account suspensions, none were overturned after review, indicating the company’s stringent stance on violations. Moreover, X Corp handled 31 general inquiries regarding accounts during this reporting period.
The complaints from Indian users predominantly concerned ban evasion, with 6,881 reports, followed by 3,763 complaints related to hateful conduct, 3,205 about sensitive adult content, and 2,815 regarding abuse and harassment.
In comparison, during the previous period from 26 March to 25 April, X Corp banned 1,84,241 accounts in India and removed 1,303 accounts for promoting terrorism.
