The perception of US and UK as good places is falling sharply across the globe, since last year’s presidential and Brexit votes.
Both the countries are now perceived as less friendly to foreigners and politically unstable, according to a survey of nearly 13,000 expatriates of 166 nations, says The Expat Insider survey is conducted each year by InterNations.
There are about 50 million expats worldwide, according to market research by Finaccord, and the number is expected to hit 60 million over the next five years. They often have a choice of where they want to live, and their opinions matter to countries that want to attract talented and affluent people.
The top-ranked country in 2017 is Bahrain, rated highly as a place to work and raise a family and for making foreigners feel welcome. It vastly outranks Persian Gulf neighbors such as Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, which ranked in the bottom 10 of the 65 countries in the survey.
Greece was at the very bottom of the list, majorly due to country’s economic problems. China is another favourite place for the expats, where two-thirds of respondents are happy with their careers. But China ranks 55 out of 65 overall because of quality of life.
Respondents are especially concerned for their children about the severe pollution and the quality and cost of health care and education. Taiwan, which topped last year's list, slipped to fourth place, while Singapore edged into the top 10.
