Toilet- Ek Prem Katha is on a record breaking spree in the first extended weekend. The limited budget affair has raked in big numbers and has lit up the box-office.
A lot was riding on TEPK to perform at the box-office and set Bollywood out of its dull phase. Looking at the numbers, the film has successfully brought in a large number of audiences to the theatres. TEPL has already been labelled as a big success, with a very long run projection at the box-office.
TEPK started off on as an average note collecting Rs 13.10 crore on Friday (11th August). The film started on a decent note in the morning shows, but the occupancy picked up in the evening and night shows. Saturday (12th August) saw a big growth for the movie. TEPK raked in a whooping Rs 17.10 crore on Saturday. The film picked up even further on Sunday (13th August) and collected a massive Rs 21.25 crore on Sunday.
How often do we see a Bollywood film fail miserably on Monday? Well, this was not the case with the Akshay Kumar starrer. The film maintained a good hold on Monday (14th August), collecting Rs 12 crore. The partial Janmashtami holiday helped the movie sustain good numbers on Monday. After passing the crucial Monday test, all eyes were on the big Independence Day holiday. TEPK saw a superb occupancy on Tuesday (15th August), raking in Rs 20 crore.
The movie stands at a 5 day total of Rs 83.45 crore. Looking at the trend, the film is expected to bring in Rs 14-15 crore in the next two days, taking the week 1 total to Rs 97-98 crore range. This will be Akshay’s biggest week-1, leaving behind Singh is Bling and Rowdy Rathore.
If we compare the highest week 1 of 2017, Baahubali leads the charts with Rs 247 crore, followed by Raees at Rs 109 crore and Tubelight at Rs 106 crore. TEPK already holds the fourth spot in the list with Rs 83.45 crore in 5 days. However, TEPK is expected to go past the lifetime total of Raees (Rs 139 crore) and Tubelight (Rs 121 crore) and be the highest grosser of 2017 for the time being.
Riding on good reviews and positive word of mouth, TEPK is the perfect comeback for Bollywood. TEPK will be Bollywood’s first hit after a big gap of 5 months. The last box-office success for Bollywood was back in March 2017 with Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya. Ever since, all the films, big and small have tanked at the box-office.
Released in over 3200 screens, TEPK will escalate strongly in week-2. The distributors would bet high on the movie, considering its good performance in week-1. Despite the release of Annabelle: Creation and Bareilly ki Barfi, TEPK will retain solid screen count close to 2300-2400 screens in week-2. With good week-2 collections, TEPK has the potential of becoming Akshay’s biggest grosser, leaving behind Rowdy Rathore (Rs 131 crore).
A film made with a mere budget of Rs 18 crore, the makers would be in awe of the box-office numbers. All praise to Akshay Kumar for choosing a less commercial film that deals with the topic of open defecation and pulling it off together. The actor has been on the top of his game and has delivered 5 back-to-back Rs 100 crore affairs in less than two years of time.
Akshay’s last release,‘Jolly LLB-2’, was a box-office success and with TEPK entering the Rs 100 crore club, it clearly shows that Akshay Kumar is the most bankable actor in Bollywood.
