Fast 8 becomes the second film of 2017 to hit the $100 million mark in its opening weekend.
The film premiered in over 60 international markets, bringing in a record $432 million over the extended weekend, resulting in record shattering $532 million worldwide. This is the second time a Fast franchise has opened with more than $100 million at the domestic box-office. We can certainly expect a few more of these with Fast 9 and Fast 10 planned for 2019 and 2021, respectively.
Despite poor reviews, the film fared very well internationally, thanks to the loyal fan base the franchise has gathered over the years. The film is currently rated 7.4/10 on iMDB and 64% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Fast 8 is directed by F. Gary Grey and written by Chris Morgan. The film stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Ludacris and Charlize Theron. The film, that released on 14 April, was made on a budget of $250 million.
The action-packed movie broke the international opening record previously set by Jurassic World with $316 million, as it brought in a massive $432 million. If we combine the $100 million domestic collection, the film collected a record $532 million worldwide, breaking the previous record of $529 million by Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
All these numbers were only possible because of the superb international market. China was massive and the film brought in $190 million from the country. This is the largest 3-day opening weekend of all time in China and the biggest Hollywood opening of all time.
India has always been an important market for the franchise and the film brought in $10.5 million from the market. Other top performing countries were Mexico, the UK, Russia and Germany.
The Beauty and the Beast continued its solid run and entered the $1 billion mark, making it the 22nd film to achieve the feat.
Fast 8 is yet to open in several foreign markets such as the Philippines, Serbia and Japan
