Tata Motors Group In Process Of Pivoting Its Underlying Business Model Towards Sustainable Mobility – N Chandrashekaran
The Tata Nexon EV, the first BEV from Tata Motors has been one of the highest-selling Electric 4Wheeler in India, Selling 4,000 units, 14 months after launch. The Jaguar I-PACE, the first fully battery-electric vehicle from Jaguar which is a part of the Tata Motors Group, had won over 80 global awards, including the prestigious World Car of the Year, World Car Design of the Year, and World Green Car in 2019. Additionally, Jaguar Land Rover is developing a prototype hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) based on the new Land Rover Defender, with testing scheduled to begin this year.
With a clear roadmap ahead for the future of electrification, N Chandrasekaran chairman of Tata Group In his address to the shareholders in the 76th Annual Report said “Tata Motors Group is in the process of pivoting its underlying business model towards sustainable mobility. Jaguar Land Rover is targeting 100% zero tailpipe emissions for the portfolio it sells by 2036. Jaguar will become fully electric by 2025. 60% of Jaguar Land Rover’s volumes will be pure BEV vehicles by 2030.”
For Tata Motors in India, The Nexon EV, The first fully BEV from the company has seen a lot of success. The strong market performance of the Nexon EV has contributed to Tata Motors recording its highest-ever sales of EVs, for both March 2021 and Q4 FY2021. The EV penetration in the company’s portfolio has now doubled to 2% this year and it expects to increase exponentially in the coming years.
“Tata Motors will lead this change in the Indian market. By 2025, Tata Motors will have 10 new BEV vehicles and as a Group we will invest proactively to set up charging infrastructure across the country.” Said Chandrasekaran
Tata Power on the other side of the E-Mobility equation has set up more than 400 charging stations in 65 cities and on several prominent intercity routes across India. It is planning to scale this up to 700, across most major cities and highways by December 2021. In addition, the Tata Group is actively exploring partnerships in cell and battery manufacturing in India and Europe to secure the supplies of batteries. The company is also evaluating an automotive software and engineering vertical within the Group that will help it lead in a new world of connected and autonomous vehicles.
