In a move to enhance sustainability, Starbucks has set an ambitious target to completely phase out disposable cups to reduce its waste, water consumption and carbon emissions by 50 per cent by 2030.
The iconic Starbucks disposable cup, featuring the recognisable green siren logo, has long been emblematic of global consumer culture. However, with its contribution to waste and greenhouse gas emissions, the company has decided to completely eliminate these cups.
Starbucks' multifaceted mission seeks to promote the widespread use of reusable cups while also developing more sustainable disposable cup alternatives.
Starbucks is actively increasing the utilization of recycled materials in its disposable paper cups, aiming for all US cups to contain 30 per cent recycled material by early 2025, according to the data.
While progress is evident, Starbucks acknowledges that long-term waste reduction will heavily depend on the adoption of reusable cups. However, as of now, only 1.2 per cent of global sales in fiscal year 2022 originated from reusable cups since their reintroduction in some stores in July 2021.
