In a recent keynote session on ‘Building for the future’, at the BW Businessworld Future of Design Summit and Awards 2024, Sarika Shetty, Partner at SJK Architects, unveiled their firm's groundbreaking approach to architectural design, emphasising sustainability and cultural resonance.
Under Shetty's leadership, SJK Architects, comprising 40 creatives led by four individuals, has embarked on a mission to enhance livability in a rapidly evolving world. Drawing inspiration from nature's versatility, Shetty likened their collective to the intricate honeycomb structure, symbolizing simplicity, sustainability, and multifunctionality.
Speaking about their diverse projects across India, Shetty highlighted the firm's commitment to deep introspection and connection with nature, culture, and climate. Early projects like the Wellness Center in Milan exemplify this ethos, blending thoughtful design with climate-conscious elements.
Discussing the challenges and triumphs of their projects, Shetty showcased the transformative work done on a factory in Tamil Nadu, India, catering to the weaving industry. The factory's success, recognised with a Tucker award for stone buildings, underscores SJK Architects' dedication to sustainability and human-centric design.
Furthermore, Shetty outlined projects such as a Mahindra design centre in Mumbai, a serene hotel in Tirupati, and a tranquil resort in Bihar's Bodh Gaya, each embodying innovative design principles and cultural reverence.
Shetty said, "Our goal is to create spaces that not only function efficiently but also resonate with the cultural and environmental context. Sustainability is not just a trend but a fundamental aspect of our practice."
The keynote session concluded with a glimpse into SJK Architects' transformative work on a residential complex in Chennai and a film studio in Bangalore. These projects showcase the firm's unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of sustainable architecture and fostering holistic well-being.
