Karnataka State Energy Minister KJ George has announced the upcoming recruitment of 2000 linemen for the Energy Department, with the official notification set to be published within the next 15 days.
During a press conference at the Raichur District Collector's office, following a meeting with district representatives, the energy minister commended the record power generation achieved by the Raichur Thermal Power Station (RTPS), Yaramaras Thermal Power Station (YTPS), and Ballari Thermal Power Station (BTPS), ensuring there were no power shortages during the summer. "From January to the end of May, an average of 2,000 million units of electricity was generated daily. In April alone, 2,400 million units were generated, marking a record achievement."
He praised the performance of RTPS, where the 3rd power unit, with a capacity of 210 MW, produced 216 MW on April 4. The seven power units of RTPS collectively achieved an 85 per cent electricity production rate. YTPS generated 6229.250 million units in the financial year 2023-24, surpassing the Central Electricity Authority's target of 6000 million units. BTPS also set a new production record with 8208.476 million units.
The Minister dismissed rumours about the closure of the first unit of RTPS due to its age, confirming that funds have been allocated for its repair as per the KPC board meeting decision.
Minister George also emphasised the commitment to a transparent recruitment process that will be conducted state-wide in a single day.
"Locals will be given priority for YTPS posts, with reservations under 371J," stated Minister George. "However, due to a shortage of skilled local workers, KPCL will provide the necessary training to ensure employment opportunities for our youth. The state government is prioritising skill training for these positions."
The Minister also highlighted the recent appointments of 1000 Assistant Engineers (AE) and Junior Engineers (JE), with work orders already issued. "400 newly appointed Assistant Engineers have completed practical training and have requested prompt appointments. Thanks to the persistent efforts of senior officials, appointment orders were issued within six months," he added.
Coal Supply Assurance
Minister George assured that there is no coal shortage, with a month's supply in stock. "Coal is being sourced from three units in partnership with the central government and from captive mining. Currently, we have 14 lakh metric tons of coal in stock," he stated.
The meeting was attended by MLAs Dr. Shivraj Patil, Hampaiah Naik, Manappa Vajjal, Basavaraj Thuruvinahal, Legislative Council Member Vasant Kumar, Gaurav Gupta, Additional Chief Secretary to the Energy Department, Pankaj Kumar Pandey, Managing Director, KPTCL, and other senior officials.
