Awarded by Ircon International, Patel Engineering, along with its joint venture partner, was entrusted with constructing Tunnel T-15 and part Tunnel T-14. The project involved building a main tunnel and an escape tunnel, each 14.3 km long, and the foundation and substructure for Bridge No. 61 spanning 99 metres with two piers and two abutments on the Katra-Banihal Section of the USBRL Project. The total value of the project was approximately Rs. 2,300 crores.
The Tunnel T-15 and part Tunnel T-14 project significantly enhances all-weather connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of India, overcoming the challenges of its Himalayan location. The project involved tunnelling activities such as heading, benching, invert excavation, kerb concreting, and installing Geo-textile, Geo-membrane, reinforcement, and concrete lining. Meticulous planning, ventilation, dewatering, and a more than 25 km pipeline for construction water were crucial.
Geological challenges, like loose rocks during tunnel blasting, were managed with an umbrella-type pipe roofing system. NATM technology was adopted to carry out the tunnel works, which is both a construction method based on the actual rock encountered and a design philosophy, with around 1600 skilled and semi-skilled workforce during the peak construction phase of the project.
The entire USBRL project, spanning 272 kilometres, is a project of national importance. The Indian Railways conducted a successful trial run from Sangaldan to Reasi at a speed of 110 km/hr, passing through the T-15 tunnel and part Tunnel T-14.
Kavita Shirvaikar, Managing Director, Patel Engineering said, “This accomplishment not only showcases our capacity to tackle substantial challenges but also underscores our dedication to infrastructure development that serves communities and fosters regional integration. The USBRL project will decrease travel time and generate new opportunities for socio-economic growth in Jammu and Kashmir. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the entire team and my sincere gratitude for their meticulous planning and the tireless efforts of our engineers and workers, which have culminated in this successful milestone.”
The substantial completion of Tunnel T-15 and part Tunnel T-14 enhances critical infrastructure and economic opportunities, showcasing Patel Engineering Limited's commitment to overcoming challenges with innovative solutions and rigorous safety standards. This milestone sets a benchmark in the construction industry and advances regional development.
