Coal India increased coal production by 13.4 per cent year on year to 53.6 million tonnes (MT) in July 2023. Coal India (CIL) stated in a statement on Tuesday that its July output was 53.6 MT, up from 47.3 MT in July last year.
CIL’s output reached 229.1 MT in April-July 2023, up 10.7 per cent from 207 MT in April-July 2022. The coal PSU has set a target of 780 MT of coal production in FY24. CIL produced 703 MT of coal in FY23.

“All of our subsidiaries increased production over the previous fiscal year, with SECL leading the way with a 10 MT increase. Bharat Coking Coal (BCCL), Northern Coalfields (NCL), Western Coalfields (WCL) and South Eastern Coalfields (SECL) have progressively exceeded their respective targets until July 2023,” a senior company official stated.
CIL’s total supplies reached 58.3 MT in July, a 7.2 per cent increase from 54.4 MT on 22 July. Total deliveries to all-consuming sectors increased to 244.5 MT from April to July 2023, a 5.7 per cent increase over the previous fiscal period of 231.2 MT.
Supply to coal-fired power plants stood at 201.5 MT in July of the current fiscal year, representing a 1 per cent increase over the previous year. “Coal stocks at their end stood at 33 MT as of July end, providing a comfortable buffer to domestic coal-based plants. This is nearly on a level with the beginning of the year, with little contraction. CIL’s end-of-year coal inventory is 53 MT,” the business stated.
According to CIL, the overburden of coal from mines totalled 641 million cubic metres.
