Portrait Mode Photos have created a lot of buzz since this technology was launched, now the portrait mode is also coming to the video side of things. OPPO has recently introduced its Full Dimension Fusion (FDF) Portrait Video system ahead of its Reno5 Pro 5G launch in India. Let's find out what is this Full Dimension Fusion System all about.
Well, we have seen big hardware advances in the smartphone but it’s the software that plays an essential role in creating a high-quality final image. OPPO claims to integrate, strong hardware, flexible software, and a lot of algorithms to provide higher quality videography experience and portrait mode effect in video.
OPPO’s FDF system works with two software systems to provide this enhanced imaging quality
The Quality enhancement engine automatically adjusts the output from the camera and captures the best possible footage using AI Highlight Video and Ultra Steady Video 3.0. The AI Highlight Video part of the engine understands what you are trying to capture using AI and adjusts camera settings accordingly. If you are trying to capture some footage of food for Instagram, the AI would know and select punchier colors, increase dynamic range, reduce noise and depth of field accordingly.
The dynamic range enhancements are done using Dynamic Range Conversion (DRC) and Filmic Tone Mapping (FTM) algorithms applied to each frame and followed by Multi-frame HDR Fusion algorithm. Meanwhile, Noise is always an issue with low light imaging, over here Adaptive noise reduction enhancements use multi-step Temporal Noise Reduction and Spatial Noise Reduction Algorithms to deliver AI highlight videos.
Lowlight also means slower shutter speeds resulting in a shaky or blurred output and this is where the Ultra Steady Video 3.0 part of the engine works with providing electronic video stabilization.
The Portrait Perception Engine is the one responsible for the portrait mode videos and it uses a lot of AI and Tech to achieve this. The system uses Scene Design Manager, AI Modeling, and Portrait Processing for accurate processing, tailored optimization for better portrait videos. The Scene design manager can identify whether you are holding a bottle in your hand and blur the background accordingly keeping the bottle sharp along with you. While with the AI Modeling OPPO claims to have incorporated over 10 Million portraits in its database for accurate modeling of the subject.
Since it's a Portrait mode video, we are talking about, the software has to keep up with the subject moving as well. This is where the portrait processing and optimization system comes on using face optimizations, motion tracking, and instance segmentation.
The OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G is expected to launch on January 18 in India with Mediatek’s Dimensity 1000plus Soc, This SOC has some nice innovations in the camera department as well. How well does the OPPO’s Full Dimension Fusion (FDF) Portrait Video System really work? we would be able to tell once we review the Reno5 Pro 5G. But it seems like OPPO is really working hard to provide its users with a great camera system.
