A recent Crux study across 270 microenterprises, 11,000 'financially excluded,' individuals and 40 lending institutions, provides compelling insights into OCEN's transformative potential. The Crux study underscores OCEN's capacity to bridge prevailing gaps, mitigate lending risks, and empower both lenders and borrowers. It also highlights that OCEN can substantially reduce lending risks by furnishing dependable borrower data for informed, data-driven lending decisions. This reduction in risk, lowered ‘acquiring and servicing' costs, is expected to entice more financial institutions into the OCEN network, thereby further expanding access to credit and enhancing financial inclusion.
The majority of lenders participating in the study believe that OCEN's cost-effective approach will curtail the expenses associated with underwriting and servicing small loans, rendering it economically viable to cater to previously excluded segments. Consequently, borrowers stand to benefit from reduced interest rates, providing a much-needed respite from the burden of high borrowing costs.
Notably, OCEN's embedded technology ensures data security, encouraging individuals to share their financial information with multiple lenders. This, in turn, fosters healthy competition among lenders, resulting in the most favourable loan offers and better terms for borrowers.

The Crux study highlights that OCEN’s impact on India's credit landscape cannot be overstated. It promises to dramatically expand formal credit channels to millions of hitherto unbanked or underbanked individuals, comprehensively addressing their financial needs. In rural areas, OCEN holds the promise of catalysing economic activities by empowering oft-neglected farmers with access to credit for essential agricultural inputs, thereby enhancing productivity and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities.

The OCEN traces its roots back to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). India Stack, anchored by Aadhar and UPI, has the potential to disrupt India's fintech sector by extending its reach across an array of applications through open APIs. Its primary objective is to enable remote, paperless, and cashless service delivery. This transformation empowers emerging digital platforms to play pivotal roles in reshaping India's credit landscape.

Tightening the regulatory framework to safeguard data privacy and security is paramount.
