H.G. Gauranga Das, the author of the book, The Art of Focus, underscored the importance of humility, how to co-exist with nature, how frugal living is beautiful, and how nothing in life is indispensable.
He believes in the concepts of perseverance, devotion, gratitude, and balance for a successful life.
Also, he believes one has to understand that consciousness needs to evolve.
He said that during the second lockdown last year, people realised how dear survival is. The lockdowns also demonstrated that freedom is one of our greatest privileges.
Regarding success he said, the Bhagavad Gita mentions the concept of karma. “Success and failure depend on a lot of factors and ego has no place there.”
Digital adoption and people experiencing what it is to simply be in the moment, instead of constantly rushing around was one of his key learnings from the pandemic.
Social media is a distraction “I have been observing over the last decade that the digital revolution has cost us a lot as a society. If an employee is interrupted by an email it takes one-third longer to complete a task. Almost 86 per cent of people interviewed across various levels of organisations say that social media is a distraction”, said Das.
He explained the importance of focus in even our simple daily activities. Diving into facts and figures he went on to say, “Chunks of focused time are needed for productivity. 12 per cent of workers show an addiction to emails.
Workers are overall on an average only productive for three hours a day. It takes almost 23 minutes for people to refocus once they are distracted by different things.
The United Nations loses almost $400 billion annually due to distractions. Companies in the UK lose $60 billion annually while the figure in India is a loss of $32 billion per annum.”
Importance of focus and balance in daily life Lack of focus also impacts people physically. He stated that almost 2 million people die every year due to work-related injuries and diseases just because they lose focus at a certain point. He spoke extensively on the importance of balance and its importance in our lives.
According to him, focus is one of the most important factors to achieve success.
He highlighted how focus and discipline bring out the maximum potential of a person. The concept of focus is required in all the levels of awareness we possess.
“Since February 2020 there has been a 300 per cent increase in people searching on Google on how to get your brain to focus.”
Parents today face a challenge on how to get their children to focus on basic disciplines which come to them on a platter but they do not realise that for a generation before theirs it was very difficult to get such privileges.
He concluded by stressing the importance of focus and balance in daily life.
