Meghalaya, renowned for its lush landscapes and rich biodiversity, is positioning itself as a major hub for organic farming in India. The state has revealed several initiatives aimed at transforming agricultural practices and promoting sustainable livelihoods for farmers. Among the most notable efforts are the Meghalaya Organic Value Chain Development for Northeastern Region (MOVCDNER) scheme and the State Organic Mission, which aims to convert and sustain 1 lakh hectares of land into certified organic farms. Currently, 24,000 hectares are certified organic, with an additional 8,000 hectares in the conversion process.
On 11 January 2023, the state cabinet approved the Meghalaya State Organic and Natural Farming Policy, further strengthening these efforts. The policy aims to promote organic farming as a sustainable, income-generating activity while focusing on investment, technology, and capacity building. It seeks to improve farmer incomes through training, value addition, and market linkages.
To lead the implementation of this policy, the Meghalaya Natural and Organic Society for Livelihood and Innovation in Agriculture (MEGNOLIA) was established on 1 June 2023. As the apex body under the Department of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare, MEGNOLIA is responsible for executing the Organic and Natural Farming Policy. The organisation supports Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) to professionalise organic production and marketing, while also promoting agro-industrial growth rooted in ecological sustainability.
Certification is a key aspect of organic farming, and Meghalaya now has its own APEDA-certified certification body, the Meghalaya State Organic Certification Body, making it the second such entity in the Northeast after Sikkim. This development streamlines the certification process for farmers, reducing their reliance on agencies located in Western and Southern India.
A significant milestone for the state's organic farming sector was reached on September 20, 2024, with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between MEGNOLIA and the National Cooperatives of Organic Limited (NCOL) during World Food India 2024. This partnership aims to improve the procurement, marketing, and sale of organic products from Meghalaya. Under the MOU, MEGNOLIA will link certified organic farmers with NCOL, assist with procurement approvals, and cover certification costs, while NCOL will manage logistics and ensure direct payments to farmers.
These strategic initiatives and partnerships reflect a promising future for organic farming in Meghalaya. The government's commitment, led by MEGNOLIA, is set to meet the growing demand for organic produce, improve farmer livelihoods, and promote sustainable agricultural practices that benefit both people and the environment.
