Lithuanian Minister Linas Linkevičius who is in the country on the last day of his three-day visit to India is in Mumbai at present for an interaction with the business community.
FM Linkevičius and Minister of State for External Affairs M.J. Akbar also attended the Lithuania National Symphony Orchestra concert in Mumbai on 10 October for the Centenary of the Republic of Lithuania.
Linkevičius who is in India to celebrate 25 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries, has been accompanied by senior officials of his ministry.
Lithuanian minister in his visit has called on the Vice President Venkaiah Naidu and EAM Sushma Swaraj. The ministers held discussions on the various aspects of bilateral ties as well as important regional and multilateral issues of mutual interest.
During the visit, the two Ministers signed the Treaty on Extradition between India and Lithuania and the protocol amending and supplementing the agreement between India and Lithuania related to Air Services.
India’s economic ties with Lithuania have strengthened with an Indian investment in the plastic sector in Lithuania’s Special Economic Zone and the growing awareness of the prospects in the agriculture sector. A MoU on Agriculture and Allied Sectors was signed in 2016.
High-Level Visits from India to Lithuania include Minister of State for External Affairs Salman Khurshid (August 1995), Minister of State for External Affairs Rao Inderjit Singh (October 2005) and Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma (March 2007).
Bilateral trade between the two nations totalled US$117.9 million in 2009, $184 million in 2010 and $203 million in 2011. India's major exports to Lithuania are pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, textiles and consumer goods. Lithuania's main exports to India are machinery and mechanical appliances, high tech optical instruments, base metals and articles of base metal, chemicals, sulphur, lime and cement.
