The Labour Ministry informed the Parliament that only a small fraction of job-seekers registered with the employment exchange across India are able to secure jobs.
According to PTI, labour minister Bandaru Dattatreya said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha that hardly 0.56 per cent of the job seekers got placed. Only 2, 53,900 job seeking candidates were placed out of the 4, 48, 52, 500 registered aspirants, as on September 30, 2015.
Employment in the country is a major concern and the falling numbers are alarming. Job creation has fallen to 8-year low level and the layoffs are leading employees into anxiety and depression.
The numbers have fallen hence from 2014, where 3, 38, 500 candidates got employment out of the registered 4, 82, 61, 100 job seeking candidates who sought employment through the exchanges across all states. The employment per cent rate was a mere 0.7 per cent.
In 2013, the placement was over 0.7 per cent. However, the number was slightly better in the year prior to that at 0.9 per cent. The information given by the labour ministry was on the employment provided and call letters received through employment exchanges in the last three to four years.
The minister said the labour ministry is implementing the National Career Service (NCS) in mission mode to transform the National Employment Service to provide employment related services. A total of 540 job fairs were organised under the NCS during 2016-2017. This will help match job profiles of candidates with employer requirements, in career counselling and vocational guidance, among others.
