When someone is critically ill at home or in the hospital and has to administered fluids or medication its done through an infusion device. Let’s say a patient has to be administered 0.60 ml of fluid an hour @ 0.01 ml per minute, accuracy is of huge concern in infusion device. A closed loop technology ensures accuracy meaning that just that 0.01 ml is administered and not a tiny bit more or less.
Launch of Closed Loop Infusion Pumps
Last week vTitan Corporation launched the world’s first of its kind closed loop infusion pumps, Accuflow SP-550 and Accuflow IBP-550 Syringe Infusion Pumps. Both the pumps are for critical care medication administration. The pumps are powered by indigenously developed and patented closed-loop motion control technology.
Accuflow SP-550 is designed to be used in hospitals with uninterrupted power supply and the Accuflow IBP-550 includes an integrated battery pack for portable and patient transfer applications. Speaking at the launch, Peri Kasthuri, Co-founder and CEO of vTitan Corporation, said "We are truly excited to be building high quality healthcare products in India, for the world.”
vTitan is majorly funded by Zoho Corp. According to Sridhar Vembu, CEO, Zoho Corp, “Zoho has invested more than $10 million in vTitan since its inception”
What’s different between current infusion pumps and this one
According to Kasthuri the infusions pumps currently available lack precision and accuracy. They are also inadequate in user interface. Closed loop technology addresses both the concerns especially the accuracy factor which has been a concern in currently available devices.
Advantages of closed loop technology
Accuracy
Closed loop technology in infusion pump improves the positional accuracy. It always ensures that the target position is reached with the help of encoder.
Heating
Closed-loop motion control technology also reduces cumulative position errors ensuring that the target position is always reached. Generally, the closed loop stepper system operate at lower current. It supplies additional current for the motor whenever required, to overcome problems like backslash or motor stall. Hence power consumption is comparatively less . Due to lower power consumption, unwanted heat generation is reduced, thereby increasing the system efficiency, reliability and product life.
