Delhi Chief Minister and AAP party chief Arvind Kejriwal will to return to jail today, 2 June, after a court postponed his plea seeking interim bail on medical grounds.
Kejriwal, who was released on a three-week temporary bail for election campaigning, was granted bail by the Supreme Court specifically for the duration of the Lok Sabha polls, which concluded on 1 June.
Following his release from jail on 10 May, Kejriwal has been actively involved in political activities, including holding meetings of the AAP’s Political Affairs Committee (PAC) and attending various political gatherings. In anticipation of his return to jail, Kejriwal stressed the importance of maintaining unity within the party during his absence.
Despite his impending return to jail, Kejriwal is expected to continue serving as the Chief Minister of Delhi. Reports suggest that his wife, Sunita Kejriwal, will convey his messages to party leaders, volunteers, and the people of Delhi in his absence.
Kejriwal’s plea for a seven-day extension of his interim bail was denied by the Supreme Court registry, which refused to urgently list his plea. Subsequently, he sought interim bail on medical grounds from a special CBI-ED court. However, the court, presided over by special judge Kaveri Baweja, reserved its order on his application for 5 June.
The plea cited Kejriwal’s need for medical tests due to weight loss and high ketone levels. Despite his efforts to secure bail on medical grounds, the court’s decision to postpone the hearing has left his immediate fate uncertain.
