Jammu And Kashmir To Be Given The Status Of Union Territory, Ladakh To Be UT Without Legislature

The Centre on August five informed Parliament that the state of Jammu and Kashmir would be divided as Union Territories (UTs).

The government aforesaid that Jammu and Kashmir region would become a Union Territory (UT) with a legislature and Ladakh will be a distinct UT without a Legislature.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah additionally informed Parliament that Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, which provides special status to J&K, will be overruled.

Shah said: "I am presenting the resolution to revoke Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir except the first clause 370 (1)".

This comes at a time when the prevailing scenario in Jammu and Kashmir continues to be on the edge.

The announcement came after the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval held a meeting at the PM's residence at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg.

This meeting was preceded by another meeting in which Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad was also present. It had started an hour earlier.
