As per a study by UK-based MoneySuperMarket, Mozambique, a southern African country rated as one of the poorest countries has topped a survey of nations with lowest global environmental impact while India has ranked 75th in the survey. Mozambique emerged first on the list because almost all its energy use comes from green sources, with 99.87% of its energy use coming from green sources. With 0.1 tonnes per capita in CO2 emissions, it is no surprise that Mozambique tops the list, whereas India, on the other hand, was placed 75th on the list, with renewable energy making up only 15.2 per cent of all energy used (energy from green sources); only 2.2 per cent of waste water being treated or recycled, municipal waste of 0.34 kg per capita being generated daily and 1.7 tonnes per capita of CO2 emissions. .
The rankings were based on different metrics that constitute the average individual human impact in each country, which includes energy consumption and its source, air pollution (Co2 emissions per capita), waste production and reliance on non-renewable energy or energy from green sources.
The survey helps identify the biggest contributors to environmental impact, but the results are also surprising, placing four other African nations - Ethiopia, Zambia, Kenya and Ghana - in the top seven for lowest environmental impact, where Ethiopia uses 99.43 per cent of its total energy use from green sources, Zambia uses 99.71 per cent of its energy from green sources, Kenya uses 76.17 per cent of its energy from green sources and Ghana using 68.26 per cent of its energy from green sources.
Africa as a continent topped the charts and featured strongly in its use of green energy and renewable energy, low CO2 emissions and low levels of air pollution and waste production.
But Mozambique's biggest neighbour South Africa, a relatively developed country, at 95th on the list, ranks among the worst performers for its environmental impact, faring marginally better though than first world nations and developed countries such as Australia, Canada and the US. South Africa uses just 1.01 per cent of its energy from green sources with 9.3 tonnes per capita of CO2 emissions and 2kg per capita of municipal waste.
At the bottom of the list, Trinidad and Tobago, the worst country for environmental impact, the CO2 emissions are an average of 37.1 tonnes per person and just 0.23% of its energy use from green sources and 1.59 kg per capita of municipal waste generated. USA has an average of 17 tonnes per capita of CO2 emissions and 2.58 kg per capita of municipal waste generated.
