Union Power Minister R K Singh on Thursday said that India’s hydropower potential from the major and medium schemes having a capacity above 25 MW is about 133.4 GW.
The Minister underlined the capacity as per the reassessment study which was carried out by CEA during the period 2017-2023.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Power determined the potential of hydropower region-wise. It said that a total of 46,971 MW of power capacity was recorded in the northern part of the country.
While 7,824 MW, 12,570 MW, 10,115 MW and 55,930 MW of power capacity were marked in the western, southern, eastern and northeastern regions respectively.
CEA is the Central Electricity Authority committee constituted by the government in 2013 with members from the Central Water Commission (CWC), Geological Survey of India (GSI), Survey of India (SoI), National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA), Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC) for finalising the Terms of Reference (ToR) regarding basin-wise reassessment of hydroelectric potential in the country.
