When it comes to absurd purchases, no matter how vivid our imaginations, we often find ourselves stumped. They say that great marketing can get you to pay for anything and that’s exactly what the game company behind the notorious party favourite, Cards Against Humanity, managed to do—sell nothing for $5 a pop.
On Back Friday, the self-described “party game for horrible people”, took down its regular products and instead offered people the chance to give them $5 for absolutely nothing in return.
“11,248 people gave us $5, and 1,199 people gave us more than $5 by filling out the form more than once. One enthusiastic fan gave us $100. In the end, we made a windfall profit of $71,145,” says the company’s blog post which went up on Monday.
The company is no stranger to bizarre stunts. On last year’s Black Friday, Cards Against Humanity allowed customers purchase a sleekly designed box filled with excrement for $30. The “bullshit” sold out in less than two hours with over 30,000 people emptying their pockets to receive the package in their mail.
This year, that rather giving the money away to charity like it traditionally does, the company has decided to keep the money and split it equally among its employees.
The blog post also lists where all the employees spent the splurged the money on Black Friday purchases of their own including a couple of Playstation 4s and Lord of the Rings merchandise.
