The Indian government has reacted to a fake video that surfaced, featuring well-known actress Rashmika Mandanna.
Major social media companies received an official advisory from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) on Tuesday afternoon.
The advisory asks these platforms to take prompt action to detect and eliminate misinformation, deepfakes, and any other content that violates established guidelines within a short period of 36 hours after a user reports it.
The goal of this action is to stop the dissemination of false and misleading content, which is becoming more and more common on social media.
Furthermore, online users have asserted that the contentious video was deep-faked, implying that the true subject is an Indian living in the United Kingdom.
The advisory underscores the necessity of adhering to the IT Rules 2021 and maintaining strict timelines for content removal and access restriction in response to reported violations.
Regarding cases of electronic impersonation and the dissemination of artificially altered images, social media companies have been specifically directed to act within 24 hours upon receipt of related complaints.
Failure to comply with the stipulated provisions of the IT Act and Rules could expose organizations to the loss of protection afforded under Section 79(1) of the Information Technology Act, 2000, pursuant to Rule 7 of the IT Rules, 2021.
