Father's Day is celebrated every year on the third Sunday of June among people across the globe. This year, the celebration falls on June 19.
Think about the night when the cold winds unabashedly poured down and you lay in the dark on the bed, unable to even close your eyes and sleep and having long conversations with your father, who is trying to make you fall asleep. It's very common to have these wishes to spend beautiful nights with your father, who has raised you since childhood, especially in the month of June, the month which celebrates fatherhood and the unconditional love they have for their children.
A 30 day month commemorates the pillar of strength, a guide, a mentor, and a cheerleader. There is no constant date in June when Father’s Day is celebrated. The countries like Spain, Croatia, Italy, and Portugal, it’s celebrated on 19 March.
There is no comparison to the love, acceptance, and joy that fathers bring into a child's life.
What led to the creation of this day?
The celebration has been there for ages. It was in 1910, Sonora Smart Dodd gave birth to this beautiful day at the Spokane in Washington The Young Men's Christian Association(YMCA). The first time, the day was also celebrated on June19 1910.
Sonora was inspired by how Anna Jarvis had initially started Mother’s Day in the memory of her mother, and had asked a church priest to have something similar to this, where the presence of the father in a child’s life is celebrated. Sonara's father raised six children on his own as a single parent. William Jackson Smart, his father, was a Civil War veteran. There was a tough time selling Father's Day, since Mother's Day was huge.
In the 1920’s, a movement was started to celebrate Mother's Day and Father’s Day together, so that there would be a common day to celebrate Parent's Day. But, many of them opposed this idea as the retailers had to sell their businesses of ties, hats, socks, pipes, tobacco, and golf clubs and wanted Father’s Day to be looked at as Christmas for men.
For Father’s Day to be declared as a national holiday, he spent 60 years after that. Then, in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a Congressional resolution and declared it as a federal holiday.
Significance of the day
Fathers have always secured a soft corner in a child’s heart. Often, children on this special day thank their fathers for their hardships, efforts, and for the way they raise their families. The male parents are given less credit. But the main objective of this day is to celebrate parenthood and praise their contributions.
Words of kindness
Some people find it very difficult to express their gratitude towards their father. Sometimes the words can't express the feeling that they have in your heart and it can be expressed through small gestures and the little things you do for your father. This Father’s Day you can wish them with the words of kindness and bring a smile on their face.
