The East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) on Tuesday invited request for proposal for bio-mining of 50 Lakhs Tons Legacy Waste and Disposal of excavated material, Reclamation of Land and Construction of Engineered Landfill Facility, and Setting up 150 KLD Leachate Treatment Plant (LTP) at the Ghazipur Dumpsite.
The EDMC carries out door-to-door collection of waste and its primary and secondary transportation with final disposal at Ghazipur dumpsite. The dumpsite was established in 1984 and is one of the major dumpsites in the country that accumulates over 14 million tons of legacy waste. The dumpsite is spread over an area of 70 acres.
The project primarily intends to undertake the works required for disposal of Legacy Waste through Bio-mining process for land reclamation, resource recovery and suitable disposal of residual solid waste from the Ghazipur dumpsite.
East Delhi BJP MP Gautam Gambhir had claimed in December 2020 that the entire garbage dump at Ghazipur landfill site will be processed by December 2024. The Ghazipur landfill site rises by nearly 10 metres a year and was expected to surpass the height of Qutub Minar and other vertical structures in the country.
The waste at the side has been leading to hazardous living conditions with toxic air, contaminated water for people living in nearby areas like Kaushambi, Khoda, Gharoli, Kalyanpuri, Ghazipur and Kondli.
Delhi presently has 3 dumpsites at Bhalaswa, Okhla and Ghazipur under the North, South and East Delhi Municipal Corporations respectively.
