So what is success? Achievement of an objective within a stipulated period of time or a specific parameter. It means reaching a goal which can be personal, professional or financial. Colloquially speaking, there is no specific terminology for defining success. It is about one’s attitude and behaviour that determines a person’s success. “I really believe that you are your own career builder and are responsible for your own success. Your outlook involves your perception of success (or failure) and the best part is that setting your attitude is your own choice. There are a number of pointers that I would specifically like to talk about,” says Talwar.
1) Determine IncentivesDiscover and find out what motivates you the most and take action. Once you have that, your attitude towards working hard multiplies since you do have that push to achieve your goals. You walk faster, smile more often and are determined to reach your goals.
2) Have a Positive OutlookIt boils down to one thing - Has a positive outlook. If you are going to beat yourself down and always be negative, it’s not going to get you anywhere. One can choose to either see the glass half full or half empty. It’s all about your perspective. I still remember, when I was working in New York, my workplace was almost a 1-hour commute and I used to dread it immensely, especially because it was peak winters at that time. At some point, I stopped complaining and started utilising that 1 hour for reading thought-provoking books, penning down my thoughts and finally I used to look forward to that 1-hour commute. So, it’s really about how you look at things and it all comes down to one’s own perspective.
3) Set Benchmarks/GoalsA man without setting specific goals in his journey will never be able to reach his destination. To maintain an attitude of enthusiasm, create benchmarks for success and think about them intentionally and consistently. For example. when I was starting my online business- Rugs and Beyond, there were a lot of naysayers and thought that being a woman, I will not be able to succeed. However, I stuck to my ground and set goals for myself and worked in silence while allowing my success to make all the noise.
4) Show Your HungerBe hungry for success. That way a natural eagerness will permeate your attitude. For instance, if you have a start-up and are not enthusiastic about it, your team will also feel demotivated and will slack. As Steve Jobs used to say, "Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish."
5) Thinking by WritingI am literally, all about lists. I write down everything. I also feel that each time we finish a task and we strike it off our list, there is a sense of an achievement, even though it might be a small victory. But writing down all your goals and having a to-do list really helps. I was recently at a Brian Tracy event, who is a world-renowned management guru and has written more than 80 books, said, "Write down all your goals and keep checking them off. Look back and pat your back."
6) Engage in Physical ActivityFor me exercising is a great way to relieve stress. It is a great stress buster and helps to motivate yourself. I try to hit the gym 4-5 times a week and it really helps me to push myself forward and keeps me healthy.
So, I would like to end by saying that everyone has something that can be appreciated, all we need to do is to apply a positive vision and appreciate others to develop an attitude and behaviour for success.
