Coolpad has launched its new budget-friendly smartphone The Coolpad Cool5 couple of months ago. The smartphone aims towards the budget segment of the market. It is one of the toughest brackets to crack and hence, the company priced its smartphone under Rs 8,000. It features a 6.22-inch HD display, 4GB-64 GB combination and a massive 4,000 mAh battery. How it performs? Let’s find out in this review.
Design: Coolpad Cool 5 comes with a plastic body that embraces the glossy gradient finish at the back. It looks very similar to Coolpad Cool 3 Plus (Read Review) in terms of design. The company definitely tried to give the phone a premium look.
The phone is surrounded with a big bezel from all around but considering its price, it seems OK. It sports a 6.22-inch screen with dewdrop style notch at the top. The volume rockers and power button sits at right side while hybrid SIM slot at the left. It sports a USB-C type port at the bottom, with two speaker grilles on both sides and 3.5 mm jack at the top of the smartphone.
The smartphone attracts smudges very easily and thankfully the company ships the product with cover. The phone has curved edges that make it comfortable to hold. At the rear, the smartphone sports dual camera setup with LED Flash and a fingerprint sensor at the traditional spot.
Display: Coolpad Cool 5 is equipped with a 6.22 inch IPS display with a resolution of 720x1520 and a pixel density of 270PPI. The screen is bright enough to maintain its legibility under direct sunlight. The display is not great but it is good considering the price you are paying for it. The color production of the display panel is close to accurate and it offers great viewing angles. You can easily enjoy movies, TV shows and web series on your smartphone, thanks to its 6.22-inch big display and better sound quality of speakers. Overall, the smartphone offers a better display and great value for money.
Camera: Coolpad Cool 5 comes equipped with a dual-camera setup with LED flash at the back. It features a 13 MP primary sensor, a 2-MP depth sensor. The photos captured in daylight conditions were sharp but over brightened in some cases. The bokeh mode sometimes fails to detect the edges but most of the time it performs its job very well. The modes that you are getting in the camera app are Beauty, FaceCute and Bokeh mode. It also sports 16 MP selfie shooter which clicks decent selfies. We feel that the selfies sometimes get over-exposed due to a higher level of contrast. In low light conditions, the camera hunts for focus and struggles to capture decent images. There is no option to turn off the shutter sound. To turn it off, you need to put the phone on silent or vibration mode. The camera is able to record Full HD video at 30 frames per second. Overall, the smartphone brand is offering decent cameras at this price point.
Performance: Coolpad Cool 5 is powered by 2 GHz Octa-core Mediatek MT6762 Helio P22 (12 nm) processor which is paired with 4 GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The internal storage can be expanded to 128 GB via a microSD card. In our gaming test, the smartphone performs its role very well. We played Free Fire, Wrestling Revolution, PubG to check the gaming potential of smartphones and we came to know that it lags sometimes, but most of the time it lives up to expectations. The day to day tasks was smooth but a couple of times we encountered some software issues. Coming to the sound part, It offers 2 speakers grilles on either side at the bottom of the smartphone. The sound quality is decent considering the price bracket of the smartphone. Watching Movies, Web-series and Youtube videos will be a soothing experience, thanks to big display and long battery life. It features a 4000mAh mammoth battery, so you don't need a charger all day long. As you are getting a Type-C charging port, charging time will not be an issue.
Verdict: Coolpad Cool 5 is a decent smartphone and good for basic day to day usage. If you are a heavy user of smartphones and play high-end games then this is not something you should go with. It is priced at INR 7,999 and available online as well as offline stores. Redmi 8 is worth mentioning in the segment.
