Coal India (CIL) intends to establish two thermal power plants with a combined investment of Rs 21,547 crore in Madhya Pradesh and Odisha, according to an official statement. One of the projects will be located near Amarkantak in Madhya Pradesh and is planned as a joint venture with the Madhya Pradesh government. This particular plant will have a capacity of 1 x 660 MW and is estimated to cost around Rs 5,600 crore. The project has already received advanced stages of approval and is expected to begin construction by the end of the current financial year, with a target completion date in 2028.
Another project is planned near the Basundhara mines in Sundergarh district, Odisha, and will be set up by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), a subsidiary of CIL. This project will involve the creation of a 2x800 MW pithead thermal power plant and is estimated to cost Rs 15,947 crore. The work on this project is scheduled to commence around the middle of the next year, and the anticipated completion date is also set for 2028.
