The US export curbs on China are again in the spotlight after Secretary of State Antony Blinken highlighted the restrictions were not meant to hold the Chinese country’s economic development.
The US government has imposed strict measures on the shipment of computing chips to China, since 2022. The ban even cut off Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices and Intel, among other tech major’s China sales.
The US government has highlighted this move as an attempt to safeguard its national security, as China poses a potential threat worldwide. However, the country has been criticised for allowing its two homegrown companies, Intel and Qualcomm the license to continue its shipping to a Chinese firm, Huawei.
Huawei is using Intel chips for developing its new laptop model.
Underlining the Huawei shipments, Blinken had earlier clarified that the country is focused on the sensitive technology that could create a security threat and does not aim to cut off any trade to China.
Intel and Qualcomm were issued licenses to sell to Huawei during President Donald Trump's administration and have remained in place under President Joe Biden. Meanwhile, other US companies in the similar business category like AMD and MediaTek, have not received any exemptions. The reasons for the same remain unjustified.
